Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia
Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT) is a rare genetic disorder that is classified by a specific arrhythmia in the heart. It is considered one of the Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndromes or SADS. The main symptom is sudden cardiac arrest, which without emergency treatment often leads to death, although there are milder attacks. Symptoms are typically triggered by acute physical or emotional stress. So far, there are five distinct mutations of CPVT, and the disease overall affects both sexes at an estimated rate of 1 in every 10,000 births in the US.
